What makes the second generation Range Rover so desirable?

Kinja'd!!!

I was out doing my rounds at work when I saw this^, a second generation Range Rover, and I remembered just how good looking they are.

But what is it about them that makes them so good looking? What makes them so desirable? Surely it’s not the curves...cause there literally are none.

I’m pinning it on where it stands in Lamd Rover’s history, being the last Rangie before it became the must have tool for the jet set and the soccer players...but what do I know?

Kinja'd!!!

What says Oppo?

It’s a perfectly generic utilitarian SUV, and that’s a good thing.

Weren’t those solid axle front and back?

I’d love a P38a. They are beautiful in there functionality. They aren’t prissy and showy, they are there to do a job and if looked after, do the job extremely well.

I think because of where they stand on the balance between functionality and flashiness. These are mainly functional, and the Range Rover to follow, while probably just as good off-road, is more for showing off and less for having the most comfortable way to go anywhere off-road. Or something, my thoughts aren’t really gathered. But I do love them, and I want one. I just definitely can’t afford to run one. Anecdotally, I see young people driving newer Range Rovers, that seem generally clueless. Anyone driving a P38 Rover either looks like old money, or is a younger Landie enthusiast. Though those generally go for the Range Rover Classics.

Nothing utilitarian about it. Well, that’s not wholly true, but these things were posh.

I’d venture to say plenty of jet set people had these. Not as much as the one after it, of course, and it still has the air of “old money”, but I think it had become sort of “mainstream” in the 2nd gen. That does not change anything about the fact that I want one badly. Nor does the reliability.

They’re desirable? Pretty easy to buy running for under $2k in my area.

Solid axles, mate. Solid axles.

I saw a mint one here in Atlanta last week (same color). They’ve aged so well. Looks better without a brush guard though.

Definitely true. I don't know what it is, that design just works.

Yep, last old fashioned Rangie.

I should have been more clear: I was referring to the appearance only. That’s why they’re so attractive.

I guess it’s sorta the same reason people like land cruisers except the hatred reliability

Ok, gotcha. Yes, it’s definitely wrapped in a very stately and well-proportioned brown paper bag.

It’s like a Land Cruiser but with added character of unreliability.

The are known for a ton of electrical and computer problems like the BCM (body control module). Expensive to fix.
